Travel Tuesday: 1927 Plane to Detroit

Written in Erma (Almy) Witherell's hand "my first plane ride" 1927

Written in Erma (Almy) Witherell’s hand “my first plane ride” 1927. Can you imagine that kind of plane ride???

James Rd. Runway

James Road Runway. I have no idea if this is from Saginaw (if that’s where they started from) or Detroit. I couldn’t seem to find what used to be called James Road Airport or Runway. It could be in Bay City actually, which is very near Saginaw. I know Bay City has a similarly named airport that is now called James Clements Municipal Airport. Could be the same place.

One of the many plants of Detroit, I'm sure. The arrow is point to the Grey Iron Plant

One of the many plants of the area, I’m sure. The arrow is pointing to the Grey Iron Plant. I’m not sure if this is near Saginaw or part of Detroit.

Probably this was the reason for the trip - Erma's cousin, Ivan Wiltse, in Detroit 1927

Probably this was the reason for the trip – Erma’s cousin, Ivan Wiltse, in Detroit 1927. Ivan was the son of Erma’s father’s sister, Chauncey. I wonder if this house is still standing in Detroit…

Finally got to Berlin. It is a wonderful city but some of the things like the wall and evidence of war damage seem nearly unbelievable. Taking many pictures and enjoying living it up.

1969 trip to Germany

1969 trip to Germany

My family is on the last platform. Starting from the woman sitting at the front of that platform who is my Aunt Fae, then Ken, Erma, Glenn, and Arlene followed by three unknown people. My parents have a similar picture of them doing this when they lived in Germany in the late 70’s. One day, I want to go and get a similar picture (if they are still doing them) just so I can have all three. 🙂

Travel Tuesday: South Dakota postcards

These two post cards (never mailed, nothing on the back) were from a trip my great-grandparents took with my grandparents to visit my Aunt Roxanne in Denver.

Visiting here for a couple of days. Ken came down on business so tagged along. Rode a German train for the first time. Staying at the Grand Hotel here in Nürmberg. Went to the “Christkindlesmarkt” (Christmas Market) yesterday – will write more. Got the package.

Hi Grandma and Grandpa. I’ve been in Germany 5 day’s now and I love it. Rita is really very nice and we’ve become friends. Aunt Fae and I are going to Berlin soon. I’ve seen the Nürmberg castle, the church, and the place where Hitler made all his speeches. It’s been alot of fun.

Love,

Roxanne

My aunt (the Roxanne above) had told me that my Aunt Fae had taken her to Europe in the 60’s. I was very excited to find a post card from her time there in my great-grandma’s things! It also reminds me that I should interview her about her time there. 🙂
